Plantar fasciitis

A common condition affecting the foot is PLANTAR FASCIITIS.

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the long band of tissue that connects the heel to the ball of your foot. Many different factors can contribute to abnormal stress on the heel and soft tissue attachments.

Causes include:

  1. Overuse - occupations requiring long periods of standing.
  2. Increase in activity level
  3. Weight gain – obesity, pregnancy

Inappropriate footwear

  1. Pronation – flat feet
  2. Supination – high arches

Symptoms include:

  1. Pain – sharp, worse when arising from periods of rest.
  2. Tenderness in affected area
  3. Inflammation
  4. Protective gait

Treatment:

  1. Acute management: rest, ice, massage, strapping.
  2. Appropriate footwear
  3. Orthotic therapy
  4. Anti – inflammatories: cream or orals
  5. Night Splint
  6. Corticosteriod injection
